Stetson Hats | Authentically Hand-Crafted Cowboy Hats Since 1865

Stetson hats have long been synonymous with rugged elegance, American heritage, and enduring style. As a proud new Gold Coast stockist of Stetson hats, The Freedom State is excited to offer these iconic pieces in our Burleigh Heads Boutique and online, perfect for pairing with brands like Free People, Spell, and minimalist brand Rowie the Label.

Let's delve into the rich history of Stetson, explore how to care for cowboy hats, understand the differences in materials, highlight celebrities who wear them, and examine how Western hats have become a growing trend.

The Rich History of Stetson

Founded in 1865 by John B. Stetson, the Stetson brand emerged from a personal journey. Seeking better health, Stetson ventured westward and crafted a hat suited for the harsh conditions of the American frontier. This led to the creation of the "Boss of the Plains," a high-crowned, wide-brimmed hat that became emblematic of the American West. The hat's design was both practical and stylish, offering protection from the sun and elements.

Stetson's innovation didn't stop with design. By 1886, the company had become the world's largest hat manufacturer, producing millions of hats annually. The brand's commitment to quality and craftsmanship solidified its status as a symbol of the American spirit. To see their hats handcrafted is a fascinating process with their factories in the USA and Mexico.

Caring for Your Stetson Cowboy Hat

Proper maintenance ensures your Stetson hat remains in pristine condition for years. Here are some essential care tips:

  • Each Stetson hat is crafted with world renowned quality and by using some of the below tips and tricks, you can trust your hat will last.
    • The best way to store your hat is upside down on its crown to stop the brim from flattening out. Ensure the surface is clean or store in a hat box.
    • Dust and loose dirt should be dusted off using a brush. IMPORTANT: Brush in a counter-clockwise motion starting at the left side of the hat.
    • Avoid exposing your hat to the heat from stoves, radiators, lamps, car windows and enclosed cars in the summer. The combination of the heat and perspiration will shrink the sweatband.
    • To keep perspiration from penetrating the fur felt, occasionally turn down the leather sweatband so it can dry out. If you have a light coloured hat that becomes spotted with water or grease, simply clean using a little baby talc powder or corn starch. No liquid cleaner should be used.
    • Your hat will last a lifetime if you follow these important instructions
    • Note: If your hat gets wet, simply shake off the excess water and turn down the leather sweatband. This will allow the hat to dry naturally. When the hat is wet avoid the brim touching the surface and avoid heat. This can reactivate the felting process and cause shrinkage.

Understanding Hat Materials: Beaver, Rabbit, and Hare Fur

The quality of a cowboy hat often depends on the materials used in its construction. Here's a breakdown of the most common furs:

The quality of the hat body used to make a hat is the div factor that determines the X's. In felt, it is determined by the percentage of furs used in making the hat body. Stetson use beaver, rabbit, and other animal fur to make bodies. The mixture of which furs they use determines the X's. In straw, the X's are also determined by the body used to make the hat. The tighter the weave and narrower the straw reed used to make the hat, the better X quality is marked in the hat.

    • Beaver Fur: Known for its durability and water resistance, beaver fur is considered the finest material for high-end hats. Its dense under-fur provides excellent insulation and shape retention.

    • Rabbit Fur: More affordable than beaver, rabbit fur is commonly used in mid-range hats. While not as durable, it still offers a soft feel and decent weather resistance.

    • Hare Fur: Often blended with rabbit fur, hare fur enhances the hat's texture and durability, making it a popular choice for quality hats at a moderate price point.

    Celebrities Who Wear Stetson

Stetson hats have been a favourite among numerous celebrities, both past and present. Their timeless appeal transcends generations. Some notable figures include:

    • Matthew McConaughey: Often seen sporting a Stetson, McConaughey embodies the brand's rugged charm.

    • Beyoncé: At the 2024 Grammys, Beyoncé embraced the cowboy-core trend by wearing a custom Stetson Shasta cowboy hat, pairing it with a Louis Vuitton leather-studded skirt suit.

    • Brad Pitt: Known for his laid-back style, Pitt frequently dons a Stetson, adding a touch of Western flair to his outfits.

    • Tom Brady: The NFL star has been spotted wearing a Stetson, blending athleticism with Western elegance.

    • Prince William: As a member of the British royal family, Prince William has occasionally been seen wearing a Stetson, showcasing the hat's global appeal.

The Growing Trend of Western Hats

Western fashion has experienced a resurgence, blending traditional elements with contemporary styles. This "cowboy-core" trend is characterised by the incorporation of cowboy hats into everyday wardrobes, creating a fusion of rustic charm and modern fashion.

This trend isn't limited to the entertainment industry. Everyday fashion enthusiasts are embracing Western-inspired pieces, pairing cowboy hats with casual outfits to add a unique touch.
